Minyan Wang
Minyan WangMy work begins with a sustained attention to nature: the movement of leaves, the flowering and fading of plants, the density of mountains, and the quiet persistence of living things. Chinese traditional philosophy is an important source for my practice, especially its understanding of life as cyclical, relational, and inseparable from the natural world. Painting becomes a way for me to gather strength from nature and to contemplate the meaning of being alive. I work with traditional Chinese painting techniques on hand fans, using brush, ink, colour, calligraphy, and seals. The fan is significant to me not only as a surface for painting, but also as an object held close to the body. It is practical, intimate, portable, and shaped by touch, movement, and time. On its folded or circular surface, images of peaches, persimmons, hydrangeas, landscapes, and written phrases become small meditations on growth, ripeness, fragility, memory, and renewal. Through these works, I seek a conversation between the human hand, natural forms, and inherited artistic traditions. I hope that the viewer encounters the fan not simply as a decorative object, but as a quiet companion: an object that carries reflection, breath, and an awareness of the living world.
Minyan Wang is a Chinese artist, art educator, and researcher based in Fuzhou, Fujian. Her practice draws on traditional Chinese painting, calligraphy, and the material culture of the hand fan. Inspired by Chinese philosophy and by close observation of plants and natural landscapes, she uses ink, colour, paper, silk, and brushwork to reflect on life, change, and quiet forms of resilience. Wang holds an MA in Fine Arts, specializing in Chinese landscape painting, from Fujian Normal University. She has taught art in secondary education since 2009 and founded Yunhong Jingshe Traditional Chinese Art Studio in 2023.
